Artist: Modigliani Portraits

One of my favorite portrait artist is Amedeo Modigliani (1884 – 1920). Modigliani was a late-18th century European artist who never lived to see his success, but his paintings are some of my all-time favorites. I love his portraits with elongated faces in soulful colors. Modigliani drew his faces in stretched proportions.

Step #1: First draw a guide line down the middle of the page, then draw another guideline across the center of the page. Now lets add two more guidelines, one splitting the top half and another splitting the bottom half.
Step #2: Draw a narrow oval for head, it starts near the top page and comes to the middle guideline. Now draw a long narrow neck from the bottom of the head to below the lower guideline.
Step #3: Add some narrow shoulders.
Step #4: For the face start by positioning the eyes high on the oval. Add a simple “L” nose and a three line lip.
Step #5: Time for large ears and hair.
Step #6: Use your choice of mediums to finish off the portrait. I usually suggest oil pastels or chalk pastels.
