How many exhibitions do you have a year?
Rumriver Art Center is the home to two different gallery spaces, the Jan Johansen Gallery and the 21 Step Gallery. We have two new exhibitions approximately every month. In total we average 20 shows a year. Three of these exhibitions are call for entries, where we feature artworks from multiple artists at one time. In November and December we hold our annual Holiday Show and Shop art market which is in both gallery spaces.
How can I apply for an Exhibition?
In the mid-summer of every year we will open applications for solo exhibitions for the following calendar year. Artists are notified, at the latest, by the end of October if they are accepted or denied.
You can also apply to our Call for Entry Shows, Art Fair, or Holiday Show and Shop. At this time we do not have a permanent ‘gift shop’ for year-round sales.

What do I need to apply for a Call for Entry show?
- Good quality image(s) of your artwork(s).
- Artist statement that provides information about you, gives more context to your practice, and the artwork(s) submitted.
- The title, medium, dimensions, and price of each artwork submitted.
We charge $10 per entry for Call for Entry Shows.
Can I sell my artwork through Rumriver Art Center?
Yes! We have a few opportunities where artists are able to sell their work:
Two Rivers Art Fair: In mid-summer we have our annual Art Fair at The Draw in Ramsey. Approved applicants receive a 10’ x 10’ area to set up a booth to sell their work. The Application fee for 2025 is $40 for adults, $25 for youth and if you require an extra 10’ x 10’ space, it’s an additional $25. The art center takes NO commission from sales.
Holiday Show and Shop: Every winter we have an indoor art market that spans approximately 6 weeks. Artists are invited to apply for a spot in the market with applications opening up in early Fall. Rumriver art Center receives a 35% commission from all sales at the Show and Shop.
Call for Entries: throughout every year the art center has three Call for Entry shows. These are themed exhibitions (e.g. Floral Art, Art of the Word…) where anyone in the community is welcome to submit their artwork for a chance to have it in a group-style exhibition. These shows are judged by an anonymous juror. If you sell a piece the art center receives a 35% commission.
Do I need to be an ‘established artist’ to apply for a show?
No! Most folks have their first-ever solo exhibition here! We are a community art center and our core philosophy is ‘process over product’ and exhibit a wide variety of artistic practices and disciplines no matter the skill level or how long they have been creating art.
How can I support the galleries?
Support creativity and community by sponsoring an exhibition at Rumriver Art Center’s 21 Step Gallery. Your $1,000 sponsorship helps showcase local artists, provide engaging art events, and make art accessible to everyone. Sponsors will also be highlighted in our marketing materials: website, social media, and event promotions.
