Summer Art Camp Descriptions

Rumriver Art Center is offering all new Summer Art Camps in 2017. The camps provide a stimulating environment for young artists to grow as creative, unique individuals and to learn how to solve problems visually. Campers get to work on a variety of fun projects and participate in the joys of making art with friends, experimenting with painting, drawing, mixed-media, sculpture, and much more! Each camp has a new focus so if you love a certain camp, you can take it again and encounter all new projects. For 2017 we excited to introduce new artist instructors to our staff and they bring with them new curriculum. Click on the camp date/time for more information and registration. Acrylic Painting

Acrylic paint is a very versatile medium. It can be used in thin washes like watercolors or in thicker strokes similar to oils but with a quicker drying time. Acrylic painting introduces the beginning art student to the basics from how to handle the paint and its tools to introducing techniques used by professional artists to produce beautiful paintings. We use the layer method of teaching acrylic painting, using step-by-step instructions. We use masters like Van Gogh, Matisse, Picasso and many others as inspiration for our work. Each student will complete 4 to 5 paintings during the week.


Animal Drawing

Capture wonderful creatures of the wild with pencil, watercolor, and oil pastels. You will have fun translating what you see onto paper, acquire shading techniques, and combining color pencil with other media. You will feel a sense of accomplishment and pride in your uniquely appealing drawings. Campers will learn to draw and paint their favorite animals from dogs and cats to icky toads and snakes through the use of color, shading, composition, and perspective. We will use Henri Rousseau, Pablo Picasso and Frida Kahlo and many more as our inspiration. In this workshop campers will utilize Pencils, watercolor pencils, markers, and pastels ....sponging, spattering, and soft wash techniques to produce a series of masterpieces as they create animals in a whole new light. Part of this camp will be outdoors for drawing animals in their environment.

The hand-built pottery/clay sculpture classes will take students through process of working with clay, using under glazes and glaze. Different glazes and techniques will be incorporated into this workshop. Clay is an exciting and magical material. In clay sculpture class children will learn the art and craft of clay while having fun and exploring their creativity. Hand-built pottery is a unique program offering a total hands-on experience while learning the techniques of shaping clay into Pinch Pots, designing and constructing Slab Projects, building unique Coil Vessels, Clay Decoration, and Glazing. Come learn the art and craft of clay.

Create Your Own Animal Coloring Book

Campers are inspired by artist Charles Harper�€™s birds and animals to create their own coloring book. Campers learn how Harper constructed in animals by flattening them out with simple lines. We will go through the process of choosing which drawings will be included in the coloring book. Each student will receive a bound coloring book once it is produced along with a digital file. The coloring book will be between 25 and 35 pages. The campers will design their own coloring book cover.

Dragon Drawing

In this workshop campers will learn about the various dragons from around the world. The campers will create the benevolent dragons from Asia to the destructive dragons of Europe. They will learn the history of the dragons along with how to create all their parts. We will use pencil, paint, pastels and more to create our dragons.

Welcome to Hogwarts! First Years this way, the rest of you get up to the castle! Get ready for a magic week of art making with the wizarding community and leave those muggles behind! Inspired by the Harry Potter books and movies, here are a few words to bewitch your minds: dangerous, smoking potions, capes, goblets, magic, wands, spell books, phoenix, dragons, magic broom, House teams, golden snitch and (dare we say it?) the Deathly Hollows. Students will have chance to use pencil, charcoal, pastels and watercolor.


Minecraft Art

This is perfect camp for artists who love to draw and fascinated with Minecraft. The creative and building aspects of Minecraft enable players to build constructions out of textured cubes in a 3D procedurally generated world. The Minecraft art camp will allow kids to use their knowledge of Minecraft to create their skins and worlds. Other activities in the camp will include exploration, resource gathering, crafting, and combat. Campers will use sketching pencils, watercolor pencils, markers, acrylic paint, pastels and polymer clay to produce a series of masterpieces of their favorite characters.

Do you like draw, are always doodling? We have the perfect camp for you. In this camp you learn to draw Minions and more. Mixed Media

The mixed media camp gives the students the opportunity work with several mediums on several different materials. The students will create collages, paper mache and more. Artists like Picasso, Miro and Warhol are used to inspire the students�€™ projects. Campers will learn how to use different mediums together to create their work. Each day we will use different materials and techniques to create artistic projects that stimulate the imagination. Students will experience drawing, sculpture, watercolor, and acrylic painting along with art outdoors along the river.


Mosaic Stained Glass

Mosaic and Stained Glass art has been around forever. We will look at artists like Marc Chagall and Picasso for inspiration. Campers will learn how to design, assemble and grout tiles. The camp will include several stained glass projects from picture frames to candle holders. Some of the projects campers will do are framed mirror, steppingstone, glowing bottle, stained-glass pane and more. Due to the type of tiles we will use campers must be 8 or older to participate in this camp.

Mystery Art Camp Multi-Arts Camp is a skills building projects-based camp that exposes children to drawing, painting, and assemblage. Students are invited to sign up for multiple weeks. Students will experience drawing, watercolor, mixed media and acrylic painting along with art outdoors along the river.?


Nature Art Sketchbook

Nature is an open canvas as we walk outside to find our subject. We will draw plants, animals and bugs that we see along the beautiful Rum River. Observational drawing is a tool that encourages looking closely and recording what you experience. The campers will create a nature sketchbook of their very own and head outside to draw about what they see, hear, smell and wonder. Students will have chance to use pencil, charcoal, pastels and watercolor to create their vision. This camp will be outdoors for entire camp rain or shine and students need to shoes for walking.

Sharks and Sea Creatures

Campers will be learning and creating art using Sharks and Sea Creatures. We will use a variety of sharks and sea creatures for our inspiration. Campers will create everything from the gentle giant whale shark to the man eating great white shark. We also be creating all sorts of dolphins, whales, sea turtles, squid and other sea creatures for this camp. Students will have chance to use pencil, charcoal, pastels and watercolor to create their sharks and other sea creatures.


Star Wars

Are you a Star Wars fan? Do the movies get you interested in drawing and creating some of those amazing Star Wars characters? The Rumriver Art Centers is offering a Star Wars inspired Summer Camp. Campers will use sketching pencils, watercolor pencils, markers, polymer clay, acrylic paint and pastels to produce a series of masterpieces as they create their favorite Star Wars Characters in a whole new light. Superhero Drawing

Are you a fan of the Superheros? Can�€™t get enough Batman, Superman, TMNT? Love to create and draw all those amazing villain? Have always wanted to create your own superheroes? What can your superhero do? Is there a super villain? It's up to you. What would your own personal super hero look like? What special abilities would he or she need that would be really important - so they could zoom in, be your special helper, and save the day? You just might have to think about that a little bit! Inventing your personal super hero is just one of several projects that will challenge your imagination and creativity in this art camp. Campers will use sketching pencils, watercolor pencils, markers, acrylic paint, pastels and polymer clay to produce a series of masterpieces of their favorite characters.


Teen Photography

We are offering a photography art camp for students who are at least 13 years old. Students will learn about photography through the eyes of different artists. A DSLR camera is required for this camp. Campers will be outside along the Rum River for part of this camp.

Students will have chance to use pencil, charcoal, pastels and watercolor to create their bugs and birds. They will be inspired by artists from John James Audubon to Charles Harper. We will spend part of the class along the Rum River observing and drawing the bugs and birds we see.

This class is for the beginning illustrator who's interested in developing skills and their own style, while learning new techniques to create better and more realistic illustrations. You will learn some of the history of comics, character creation, basic figure drawing, body positioning and stances. If you love superheroes and creating your own unique characters, talking about and reading comics, this class is for you!

Create Your Own Animal Coloring Book

Learn to write and illustrate a story taken from your own imagination and put on paper. We will work on creating a unique and interesting short story, then paint with watercolors to create colorful illustrations. Each student will create their own short storybook and . We'll read our storybooks to each other on the last day of class!

This is a perfect camp for your Doctor Who fan. This camp students will learn to draw some of Dr Who's favorite characters. From the Doctor and his friends to his coolest and creepiest villains. Campers will use pencil, pen, ink, watercolor and more to create their projects:

Figure Drawing

This camp is for students 10 and older and is good for beginners as well as those continuing with their figure drawing practice. Warming up with quick, gesture sketches. Learn and practice proportions and correct relationship between the parts of the body, using guides like plumb-lines and negative spaces. Experience the chance to draw many types of figures.

Harry Potter

Illustrate your Own Storybook

This camp is in tandem with the create your own storybook or a creation of narrative work telling a story for those students that did not take the storybook camp. Campers will get a chance to turn their illustrations into relief or screen printing project. We will self-publish a copy of it, learning about the printing process.

Drawing Disney and Pixar Characters

The perfect camp for all those who love the animated Disney and Pixar characters. We will be inspired by Pixar "Cars" Disney's "Zootopia", "Moana" and more. Cancers will use pencil, charcoal, pastels, watercolor and acrylic paint on canvas to create their projects. A week is just not long enough.

Plein Air Painting and Drawing

During this camp children experience the wonder of the outdoors and capture it on paper and canvas. Draw and paint by Rum River. We walk to all destinations only 10 to 20 minutes away, using the walking path and sidewalks. We paint in acrylics and other media. In case of inclement weather, class will be held in the studio.Come and learn to draw and paint the landscape in the Great Outdoors. The Plein air painting camp teaches the fundamentals of color, color mixing, painting technique, approach, creating the illusion of depth, and exploring composition ideas. Nothing teaches an artist more about color and light than to escape into the outdoors and paint the landscape in plein air.

Pokémon Drawing

A fun and engaging camp where we will be drawing Pokemon characters from starters to legendary. Watch the characters evolve. This a great camp for both the Pokemon enthusiast and the person who likes to draw fun characters. We will go through step by step for those who need it. Each morning starts with a game of Pokemon Pictionary.

The polymer clay camp will take campers through process of working with polymer clay. Polymer clay comes in bright non-fading colors, is easy to work with and is baked at studio the same day. Campers will learn about different techniques as we create miniature creatures, food, jewelry and more. Campers will also learn how to make a mold so they can create millions of the same item.

Sculpture - Clay, Paper Mache, and more
7/10 - 7/14 9:00am - 12:00pm 

Learn to handbuild all kinds of animals and their dwellings - from creepy critters to the king of the jungle! Create animal masks, bird bowls, sculptures, and more in this adventurous camp. Campers get understand the importance of building their form to build their sculpture. We will be using paper Mache, clay, paper and more to create our sculptures.

Screen Printing and More!
8/7 - 8/11 9am to 12pm

Campers will learn multiple methods of printing such as screen printing, nature printing, relief printing and more. In this camp, you will create your own designs and learn the basics of printing as you apply those designs to paper, posters and canvas. In these classes, students will learn the basics of printing and be able to print their own artwork. This class would use materials from nature walks to create imagery in the cyanotype form. Campers will use elements from nature to create an image (drawing with grass) or document the beauty of nature. Campers will also use direct draw method in monotyping uses a slab of ink and no press. Ink is applied to a piece of glass or plexi-glass and the paper is placed face down on the ink. Pressure is applied to the back of the paper, causing the ink to transfer. It creates a soft, fuzzy line or texture.


Sharks and Sea Creatures

Campers will be learning and creating art using Sharks and Sea Creatures. We will use a variety of sharks and sea creatures for our inspiration. Campers will create everything from the gentle giant whale shark to the man eating great white shark. We also be creating all sorts of dolphins, whales, sea turtles, squid and other sea creatures for this camp. Students will have chance to use pencil, charcoal, pastels and watercolor to create their sharks and other sea creatures.

Star Wars

Are you a Star Wars fan? Do the movies get you interested in drawing and creating some of those amazing Star Wars characters? The Rumriver Art Centers is offering a Star Wars inspired Summer Camp. Campers will use sketching pencils, watercolor pencils, markers, polymer clay, acrylic paint and pastels to produce a series of masterpieces as they create their favorite Star Wars Characters in a whole new light. You will learn to sketch these characters through a structured step-by-step method. Campers will also use polymer clay to miniature Star Wars characters.

Superhero Drawing

Are you a fan of the Superheros? Can't get enough Batman, Superman, TMNT? Love to create and draw all those amazing villain? Have always wanted to create your own superheroes? What can your superhero do? Is there a super villain? It's up to you. What would your own personal super hero look like? What special abilities would he or she need that would be really important - so they could zoom in, be your special helper, and save the day? You just might have to think about that a little bit! Inventing your personal super hero is just one of several projects that will challenge your imagination and creativity in this art camp. Campers will use sketching pencils, watercolor pencils, markers, acrylic paint, pastels and polymer clay to produce a series of masterpieces of their favorite characters.


Teen Photography
7/24 - 7/28 9:00am - 12:00pm 
We are offering a photography art camp for students who are at least 13 years old. Students will learn about photography through the eyes of different artists. A DSLR camera is required for this camp. Campers will be outside along the Rum River for part of this camp.
