Homeschool and After School Classes

The Rumriver Art Center offers art classes to PreK, homeschool, and after school art students year-round. Classes include drawing, acrylic painting, watercolor, clay pottery/sculpture, art sketchbook, figure drawing, mixed media and more. We are the art resource for the entire community and help students of all ages explore their creativity through visual arts. The Rumriver Art Center is a 501(C)(3) non-profit organization.

Class Descriptions

Acrylic Painting
Acrylic paint is a very versatile medium. It can be used in thin washes like watercolors or in thicker strokes similar to oils but with a quicker drying time. Acrylic creative painting introduces the beginning art student to the basics from how to handle the paint and its tools to introducing techniques used by professional artists to produce beautiful paintings. We use masters like Van Gogh, Matisse, Picasso and many others as inspiration for our work.
Ages: 8 - 17
Prerequisite: Artist Sketchbook or Drawing 1 course

Artist Sketchbook
This class combines drawing and other mediums. Each student receives a sketchbook and has weekly assignments. Students tell visual stories. The Rumriver Art Center lessons are based off the elements and principles of art. Students learn about different artists, what how and when they created their work.
This class is a prerequisite for several other classes.
Ages: 5 - 17

Creating with Clay
Students will be taught basic hand-built pottery techniques; they will create and paint with underglaze their projects each week. The projects will be fired in our kiln and ready in about a week.

Drawing 1 - Elements of Art Through the Eyes of Artists
This course is aimed at teaching the most fundamental drawing skills through the eyes of Artists from da Vinci to Picasso. In this class we will cover the building blocks for great drawing, which is the elements of art. Each class will focus on a different element of art; Line, Shape, Color, Texture, Value and Perspective. Students will learn how various artists used these elements to create their work. Students will be learn by the step by step method, which makes a difficult project easier.
This class is a prerequisite for several other classes.

Drawing 2 - Exploring Color and Texture
This course is focused on the elements of art of color and texture, two key fundamental drawing skills. We will learn the differences between contour drawings (line drawings) and drawing with value. Students will experiment with color theory and how colors react when next to other colors. Other fundamentals will be taught such as understanding different drawing tools, creating gray scales, different techniques for creating value, The lessons for this class will be inspired from artists from past to present.

Prerequisite: Artist Sketchbook or Drawing 1 course

Drawing 2 - Exploring Line and Shape

Figure Drawing
This class is for students 10 and older and is good for beginners as well as those continuing with their figure drawing practice. Warming up with quick, gesture sketches. Learn and practice proportions and correct relationships between parts of the body, using guides like plumb-lines and negative spaces. Experience the chance to draw many types of figures.
Ages: 10 - 17

Mixed Media
The mixed media class gives the students the opportunity work with several mediums on several different materials. The students will create collages, paper mache and more. Artists like Picasso, Miro and Warhol are used to inspire the students projects.
Ages: 5 - 17

Open Studio
The open studio class give students a chance to come to the art center to work on their projects. You can bring your own materials or for small fee can use ours. We will have an artist present to answer questions, give assistance, and provide materials. You can come every week or just stop in when you have need.
Cost: $7.50/single open studio time
Ages: all ages

PreK Child Only Art
Using a variety of techniques and materials, we will explore the beginning stages of color theory.
Ages: 4 - 5 (child must be potty trained)

PreK Parent and Child Art
In this class parent and child participate together. Using a variety of techniques and materials, we will explore the beginning stages of color theory.
Ages (child): 3 - 5

Stained Glass Mosaic
Mosaic art has been around forever. We will look at artists like Marc Chagall and Picasso for inspiration. We will provide all art materials. Using a, step by step method, you will create your own Mosaic or stained glass project. Students will learn the planning process and form building before delving into their projects.
Ages: 9 - 17
Prerequisite: Artist Sketchbook or Drawing 1 course

Teen Artist Sketchbook
This is a class to inspire creativity in teen artists and give teen artists the tools to create. This class has project based lessons that will challenge them while they complete the lessons in their sketchbook. Students will learn about various artists, styles and types of drawing from observational drawing to anime. Students will design their sketchbook cover. All materials including the sketchbook included.
Ages: 13 - 17

Tolkien Tuesdays
Join us for our Tolkien Tuesdays where we will be drawing characters and creatures from Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit. Students will be using pencils, pens, markers and other art materials to create their work. This all ages class is exploring J.R.R. Tolkien's world through art.
Ages: 10+

Polymer Clay
Join us for a curriculum and classroom designed especially for creating art. The polymer clay class will take students through process of working with polymer clay. Polymer clay comes in bright non-fading colors, is easy to work with and is baked at studio the same day. Students will learn about different techniques as we create miniature creatures, food, jewelry and more.
Ages: 5 - 17

Watercolor
The most brilliant quality of watercolors is transparency and in this class students will learn how to use it in their watercolor creative painting. We will learn how to use the palette, how to mix color in order to have the right shade, and a lot about brushes and brushstrokes. Artists like O'Keefe, Monet and Klee are used as inspiration.

Sessions: Each session consists of eight 90 minute classes that meet once a week for eight weeks
Session Fees: $80 for 8 week session
Material Fees: Clay $40, Acrylic Painting $35, Mixed Media $25, Photography $15,Figure Drawing, Art & Art History Drawing, Charcoal Drawing and Artist Sketchbook $10
Drop-ins: Drop-ins are welcomed if space available –NA for Acrylic Painting and Phorography
Drop-in fee: $15 plus material fee if applicable
